After years of wishing and pleading, the open source media player has turned full circle, as Kodi, formerly known as Xbox Media Centre is now available on the Xbox One. Kodi and Xbox One both are wonderful in their own way.
Although it was originally created for the Microsoft Xbox, called Xbox Media Center (XBMC), Kodi has continued to evolve, spawning a community of its own and becoming one of the most popular home streaming tools around. The developers of Kodi announced on December 29th, 2017 that it is now available for the popular Xbox One console.
Kodi started its life as XBMC or the Xbox Media Center. The software was designed to transform the original Xbox console into a media powerhouse, allowing it to play and organize your entire video collection with ease. Kodi eventually took on a life of its own, but it’s fitting that it can finally enjoy a space on the modern Xbox One system.
Xbox one is not just a Gaming Console but capable of doing more things. Media player app Kodi started its life as a piece of software for the original Xbox in 2002. Kodi is in such early stages of development that it can be unstable and also lacks the functionality of regular versions of the streaming software.
The victory isn’t due to some workaround discovered by the Kodi team, however, it’s simply due to the fact that Microsoft has started integrating Windows 10 code into the Xbox One core. This allows access to a massive variety of new apps. For those who have only heard of Kodi, not used it, this is a versatile audio and video media player. It’ll let you play locally-stored files, those elsewhere on your home network and others stored on companies’ servers online.
How To Install KODI on Xbox One?
As of January 2018, Kodi is in Alpha on Xbox One. It’s unstable and lacks the features of other mature versions, in part because it’s based on the work-in-progress v18 “Leia” edition. However, you can already install it as you would any other Xbox app.
1. Switch on your Xbox One and make sure it is connected to your home network, then sign into your Xbox Live Profile.
2. Open the Xbox Store and search for “Kodi” in the search column at the top right corner.
3. Click the “Get” option to set the app to download. If it doesn’t download, then click the three pin button next to the pending status and click “Download Now” to install the app.
4. Once installed you’ll see a prompt to run the app with a long-press of the Xbox button appear. Or you can just find it on the Home display. Click on ‘Launch’.
“What you should really understand and keep remembering is that it is still in early stages of development and has very rough edges, might not be as stable as the regular version and may even be missing some functions. Due to the nature of how UWP works our hands are tied in some areas.”
Once Kodi 18 Leia becomes a stable release, we will be able to enjoy a fully working version of the Xbox One!
